Is the GED recognized in Pakistan? Separating fact from misinformation
It's the first question every worried parent asks — and the internet answers it badly, in both directions. Here's the accurate answer, cited to the only two sources that actually decide it.
The short answer
Yes, the GED is recognized in Pakistan — conditionally. According to the IBCC's Equivalence FAQs, the Inter Boards Coordination Commission recognises the GED for equivalence, but issues an HSSC equivalence certificate only when the GED was completed through an IBCC-recognised pathway and its conditions are met — not automatically for any diploma.
Where the misinformation comes from
You'll see two opposite myths online, and both are wrong:
- Myth 1: "The GED isn't recognised at all in Pakistan." False — it is recognised by the IBCC for equivalence.
- Myth 2: "A GED automatically equals Intermediate." Also misleading — the equivalence is to HSSC (Humanities Group) and is conditional, including the two-year gap for local admission.
The truth sits between the two, and it's not complicated once you read the actual rules rather than a forum thread.
The conditions that actually apply
For a local HSSC equivalence certificate, the IBCC requires the GED to have been taken through an approved study centre in Pakistan, with a minimum two-year gap between your SSC/equivalent and your GED diploma.
